Tip #8 - Doubles, What Do They Mean

Doubles. What Do They Mean

The big X goes on partners bidding slip. Now what does this double mean? Takeout, negative, responsive, penalty? Without getting too caught up in the names here is an outline of how I like to play what a double means in various situations. In some cases this may mean a discussion with partner to ensure you are on the same wave length.

These are all standard takeout doubles. Opening hand or better, either with support for other suits or a strong single suited hand with 16 or more points.
The second double in the fourth example is still takeout. Usually any doubles where partner has not bid any suit or no trumps is for takeout, particularly when opponents have found a fit. The second double also implies that East does not have a five card suit.
